All of our specialized trade partners import their wines directly from the producers in our portfolio, without detour. Smart has neither its own distributional network nor a warehouse. Instead, we offer professional support in building brands, which involves sales, marketing, press contacts, new customer acquisition, product training, informative tastings, client meetings and high-end presentations.

Given our direct personal contact to our winemakers, we offer firsthand information to our clients on a regular basis. Moreover, thanks to our permanent observation of both the domestic and international markets, we can easily identify new trends and thus react quickly to changes in consumption patterns.

Our knowledge about the unique character of each region in all of the wine producing countries that we represent ensures a sound basis for each and every sale’s argument. Further, by providing our partners with price recommendations and controlling those practiced in the markets, we also guarantee sound pricing policies.

The managing director of Smart Wines, Per Soehlke, founded the company in 1990 to become the exclusive German agent for an up-and-coming Italian winemaker elite. Hailing himself from a career in Michelin starred restaurants, right from the start he only selected the finest German wine retailers as potential clients and networked with the best regional importers to ensure high quality on-trade distribution.

As his approach was appreciated by the German trade, he gradually increased his portfolio in order to offer an even wider range of products to his clientele. Becoming the exclusive agent for several top estates from Austria in 2004 and Spain in 2006 were milestones in the development of the agency. Today Smart Wines represents some thirty producers from Italy, Germany, Austria, France, Spain, Portugal, Argentina and Chile.

Currently his team consists of seven employees, including both professionals with a background in winemaking as well as highly touted sommeliers.
